Anxiety – Definition, Symptoms, Treatment

What is Anxiety

Anxiety can be defined as “an unpleasant sense of apprehension.”  The feeling is called many things including tension, nervousness, worry, fearfulness, and angst, and everyone knows the sweaty palms, dry mouth, and wishing you were someplace – anyplace – else that accompany it.  Whatever name you give it – as rose would smell as sweet – the condition’s symptoms are the same.

Symptoms

The symptoms of anxiety may include excessive worry, inability to relax, sleep disturbances or insomnia, irritability, and panic attacks. It differs from depression in that low mood, sadness, emotional flatness, lack of pleasure in things one previously enjoyed, and listlessness, are not common features, and the sufferer tends to be more stimulated than literally depressed.

Such a hyper-aroused, acutely stressed state is expected before a speaking engagement or potential conflict, an exam or potentially dangerous activity.  However, when it becomes the norm and begins to have a detrimental effect on the rest of an individual’s life – as in the case of insomnia, anxiety has become a problem.

Anxiety Disorders

When severe and predictable it may become an anxiety disorder, such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder ( OCD ), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder ( PTSD ), Panic Disorder ( PD ), and in children Separation Anxiety Disorder. All of these conditions – remarkably common, in fact – are recognized medical problems, and sufferers need have no shame in such issues.

Men and women alike, and people of all ages – from young children to the elderly – may suffer from nervousness and worry.  While some is normal, when it becomes excessive and begins to interfere with an individual’s enjoyment of life, the time for action has arrive.
